What is Product Validation?
- Product validation is the process of ensuring that a product idea solves a real pain point for a specific group of users
- The purpose is to help avoid wasting time, money, and effort of investing heavily in building and launching a product no one needs or is willing to pay for
- Product validation includes both validating the problem and the solution
- Product validation is most helpful when done before building the product but can also be done afterwards
What are the benefits of Product Validation?
- Minimize risk
- Save resources
- Ensure market demand
- Improve Product Market Fit
When Product Validation should be done?
- Customers Research - the most important thing is to validate the problem that was identified during the research and that it’s worth solving (it is an important problem for the target audience) and has a big enough market
- Product Discovery - the next most important thing is to validate that the solution (the defined product) indeed solves the problem in an efficient and effective manner (this is especially important in case this is a new solution in the market)
- Roadmap planning - it is also important to validate the specific features planned in the upcoming roadmap and validate it is indeed needed and indeed solves a problem within the scope of the product
- Build - it is possible to build part of the product (or even part of a feature) and perform validation on that part alone
- Go To Market - it is possible to expose the product (or feature) to only a part of the users and perform validation on that group first, or, expose more than one option of the feature in order to validate which version is better
What are possible results of Product Validation that should turn on a red flag?
- People don’t understand the product’s value proposition
- Getting polite feedback but no real engagement
- Getting feedback that the problem being solved is not experienced frequently
